Inspiration for this painting came from a park in Salzburg where several Birch trees were growing. The one depicted here had particularly unusual colourings and bark texture. I thought it was extremely beautiful and touching. As with most of my work I did not wish to represent it too realistically so it took some time to arrive at the interpretation. Once finished it always reminded me of that visit to Salzburg which was my first and the painting became about the sights, smells and touch of Salzburg hence the title.
